How close the scar is to a tendon or muscle:

A scar may adhere to surrounding tissues such as tendons or muscles. As healing occurs, this adhesion can restrict movement. Therapists use specific exercises to reduce scar tightness and improve flexibility.

Shape of the scar:

Surgical scars are usually thin lines, while accident‑related scars may be irregular in shape or depth, sometimes making them more noticeable or uncomfortable.

Type of scar:

As skin heals, it can shrink and cause pain or limit motion. Hypertrophic scars may form outside the wound’s normal borders, and keloid scars can appear raised and thick.

Sensitivity of the scar:

After injury or surgery, the skin may become hypersensitive due to limited exposure to touch. This can make contact with clothing, jewelry, or surfaces painful and may even affect sleep. Therapists can help desensitize the area and restore comfort.
